24th: the first birthday spent with none of those closest to me, something that felt more than a little strange.

But making up for it were:

- A trip to the Swedish alcohol monopolySystembolaget” for my first bottles of Australian red wine in almost three months.

- Having Happy Birthday sung to me in Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish (all in a row, and by the same people).

- Having my beloved Strokes Jacket arrive in the mail – after being sent from Australia – right on my b’day.

- And having that very jacket, combined with my housemate Jens’ fake glasses, get my picture on Stureplan.se.

I should explain the beautiful irony of that last point: Stureplan is the ultra-trendy bar/nightclub district of Stockholm. Sweden’s fashionistas and all around rich & trendy young things frequent the place. There are always photographers roaming the popular clubs looking for some orange and blonde models to grace the pages of Stureplan.se.

Which does of course make it all the more ironic that I would get my picture on there dressed in a 1910 U.S. Marine’s jacket and wearing glasses that made me look like the forbidden love child from Buddy Holly and Rivers Cuomo after they met at a WWI victory parade.

To cap it off there were actually a couple of genuine military folk there on the night. Some Swedish navy officers:

Does that look on his face suggest he knew I was a fraud...
(Do you think that look on his face says he knows I’m not a real marine?)

.

Brilliant…
