Then who are the Dutch?!

George: What is Holland?
Jerry: What do you mean, ‘what is it?’ It’s a country right next to Belgium.
George: No, that’s the Netherlands.
Jerry: Holland *is* the Netherlands.
George: Then who are the Dutch?!

Five days in the land of Bicycles, drugs, clogs and windmills (see the full photo album @ flickr)

Amsterdam is a bit.. different.

But get past the stoned chavs staring at scantily clad hookers in windows and you realise this is actually quite a beautiful city.

And what better way to experience Amsterdam than on a bicycle. Bikes are literally EVERYWHERE here. When I first got on my hire bike I was a little nervous, it’s like driving in a foreign country.

But after a little while I was right at home, ringing my bell at old ladies and stray pedestrians as I whizzed past canals and “coffee houses” (the hash cafes are literally called Coffee Houses…) .

I also got to fulfill my lifelong goal of visiting windmills in the Dutch countryside. I’m not sure why that’s been a lifelong goal, but I’m quite satisfied I’ve accomplished it.

After Angelique headed back to Brussels on Sunday night, I was off to Noordwijk - the beach.

Three nights in the most laid-back hostel imaginable, eating Stroopwafels and Broodje Kroket (a cross between a Chiko Roll, meat pie and sausage in bread).

I’ve been having Ocean Withdrawals ever since I left the Gold Coast, so it’s very nice whenever I get to see open water.

Though I don’t think you’d see this on the Gold Coast…
